In the near future, a Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online has been released where players control their avatars with their bodies using a piece of technology called: Nerve Gear. One day, players discover they cannot log out, as the game creator is holding them captive unless they reach the 100th floor of the game’s tower and defeat the final boss. However, if they die in the game, they die in real life. Their struggle for survival starts now…
So the story centers around Kirito and Asuna who are both trapped in a VRMMORPG called Sword Art Online(SAO) and they are tasked with trying to free themselves from the game by clearing all 100 levels. Only by clearing all 100 levels will they be able to logout of the game. Its apparent within the first few episodes that Kirito is a level above the rest in terms of skill and becomes known as “The black Swordsman”. He gets this name because unlike most of the players he himself solo’s the front lines within the game. Shortly after episode three I believe he ends up running into Asuna again also nicknamed “Lightning” is all grown up and has joined a guild called “Knights Of The Blood Oath” and is vice commander. They end up having a moment where Kirito is trying to nap and Asuna tells him he needs to be fighting instead of sleeping. He convinces her to take a moment and rest for a minute. Asuna then ends up falling asleep though when she wakes it is hours later and Kirito is waiting and watching over her. It’s at this point that you see the relationship between them begin to take shape. Though they are clearly two of the strongest in the game there is one instance when Asuna and Kirito are mapping a dungeon and find the boss of the level 74 named “Gleam Eyes”.
It is apparent after hearing screams from a group of soldiers who they believe to be clearing or attempting to clear the 74th floor boss. Once seen earlier they were exhausted and far beyond fatigued, Klein one of kirito’s friends who only shortly showed up before hearing the screams heads with both Kirito and Asuna to help. Realizing that the only way to save the soliders and his friends is to use his new skill unique to him and him alone the “Dual Wield/Blade” skill. After defeating the Gleam Eye’s boss Kirito is at about 1 percent life and Asuna rushess to his aid and begins to cry while holding him as he has passed out. Shortly after regaining consciousness Kirito explains why he did not use the ability earlier and how it came to be. Asuna who is very scared at this point decides that she might lose Kirito if she doesn’t stay with him because she does not want to be alone…
So I had heard of the series but mostly only through friends who kept telling me it was probably the best anime to be watching at the time other then the big three. Since I had taken a break from shippuden and bleach was far to boring to watch at the time I figured why not. I had seen .hack before and loved it so figured it would be somewhat similar but probably not as good but after seeing the trailer I had to watch it ASAP.
All i can say is WOW! I haven’t been this interested in an anime since watching the first episode of Deadman Wonderland that aired on Toonami. The story was great and I absolutely love how each character was important to the story. Sometimes in certain anime such as FMA Brotherhood you don’t realize how important each character is until the very last few episodes. After the first season was over I felt like i had made friends with all of the characters even though I wasn’t in the game or series. This will tug at your heart at times so be prepared. Kirito was a great hero and you have to love his relationship with Asuna because they are so perfect together. Though they are young they act very much more adult then some of the actual adults within the game which was nice at times. This is a must see for all anime fans who love action and story. I hope you love it because i did!
